The European Commission, in partnership with the Committee of the Regions and other stakeholders, is organising the first ever European awards in organic farming, with applications invited from the organic cities and organic bio districts in Europe.

The EU Organic Awards are being held as part of the actions explicitly included in the Commission’s Action Plan for the development of organic production in the EU, which was approved in March 2021.

There are 7 categories that will receive accolades: ‘Best organic farmer’, ‘Best organic region’, ‘Best organic city’, ‘Best organic bio-district’, ‘Best organic SME’, ‘Best organic food retailer’ and ‘best organic restaurant’.

Of particular interest to the members of Organic Cities Network Europe are, as Diego Canga Fano, Principal Advisor, European Commission DG Agriculture & Rural Development, underlines in an invitation to participate in the European movement of organic cities, the “best organic city” and “best organic bio-district” categories. The deadline for submission of applications is 8 June 2022. The award ceremony will take place on 23 September 2022 in Brussels, coinciding with the EU Organic Day.

This is the first time that a competition has been organised simultaneously covering the 27 Member States of the EU. The winners will receive a very relevant recognition at European level. The jury will be composed of members appointed by the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, IFOAM and Copa-Cogeca.
