Following on from Seeham‘s win in 2022 under the category of Best Organic City, 2023 saw Vienna, another of the member cities of Organic Cities Network Europe, win the European award for the Best Organic City in the EU.

The Austrian capital city of Vienna has developed a far-reaching organic “farm to fork” concept for its inhabitants. It manages around 44,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land. The organic agricultural products from these city-owned fields are sold to the city’s inhabitants at an affordable price.

This ensures a secure food supply and provides affordable high-quality organic food for the people of Vienna and also provides a welcome boost to the local economy via the regional value chain.

The EU honours a range of organic food-related services. A total of 24 finalists from 11 EU countries were selected for each of the 8 individual awards (best organic farmer (female), best organic farmer (male), best organic region, best organic “bio-district”, best organic food processing SME, best organic food retailer and best organic restaurant/food service).
