The City of Vienna is inviting interested parties to participate in an online conference of the Organic Cities Network Europe. In January 2020, the City of Vienna assumed the presidency of Organic Cities Network Europe and, in its capacity as co-founder of this unique network, will host the conference with selected guests and personalities.
At this event entitled “Organic Cities – Wien is(s)t nachhaltig” (“Vienna Is Sustainable/ Eats Sustainably”), the City of Vienna will present its own story of success regarding organically produced food and, on the basis of various best practices, will demonstrate the strategies developed to supply the urban population in an ecologically sustainable manner.
How has the city succeeded in transforming the catering chains for hospitals, nursing and retirement homes, kindergartens and schools into a system based on high-quality, healthy and sustainable food? Which action plans and initiatives have been implemented by Vienna and what is their impact on the climate? What is the experience made in this field by other cities of the network? These and many other questions will be addressed by the Organic Cities Europe Conference to be held on 9 November 2021 in Vienna.
Programme preview:
- Organic production in Vienna: summary of best practice
- Panel discussion with international guests on the global dimension of the topic
- Organic consumption in Vienna: best practices implemented in Vienna
- Perspectives of Organic Cities Network Europe
A sustainable city food strategy and the European action plan for the development of organic production are of crucial economic and political importance. If we want Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, we need to safeguard its key resources of soil, water and biodiversity. Thus, we need to strive for the goals and targets set in the Paris Agreement on climate change, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact.
Participation is free of charge. The entire conference will be translated simultaneously into German, English, French and Italian.
